Power of the First Chakra
Muladhara, the Sanskrit name for Root or Support, is your first chakra. Your survival instincts and spiritual connection to the Earth are governed in this scarlet wheel of energy. Root chakra energy radiates in unity with the reproduction organs, however, the root chakra's sexual energy vibrates more on a masculine level, whereas the Sacral (second) Chakra focuses more on feminine sexuality. It is also speculated that the root chakra is connected to our adrenal glands; this is why your root energy center governs the realm of survival. Some say the root rules our sex glands, some say it rules our adrenal glands. Despite this feud, thousands of years of documents and most gurus agree that the first energy center governs the adrenal glands.
Your root is associated with the planet Saturn for its connection to karma, luck, manifestation, physical balance, discipline and earthly energies. When your root chakra is vibrating at a healthy level you will notice a stronger influx of karma, a more natural bond to the Earth, a stronger sex drive and a balanced sense of survival. When your root chakra is vibrating too openly you may experience behavior changes like unruly aggression, materialistic attachment or self-centeredness. If your root chakra vibrates sluggishly or is blocked completely you may experience sensitivity to fear, self-destructive behavior, low self-esteem and overly clingy emotions.
We draw our strength and inner security from Muladhara, it is what keeps us spiritually in sync with the Earth. The root chakra is involved with our very basic human desire to survive, whether it be in nature's jungle or the concrete jungle. Money can also be associated with the root chakra because of our need to obtain enough finances to survive and thrive in the modern world.
Firstly, the color red is associated with the root chakra because of the color and sound frequencies in which it vibrates. Muladhara is always shown with four lotus pedals, each with a different Sanskrit symbol to represent an aspect of this grounding chakra. Va (greatest joy), Scha (natural pleasure), Sha (delight in controlling passion) and Sa (blissfulness in concentration) encompass the true focus of the root chakra. Finally, the center contains the Sanskrit symbol for "root" and a downward arrow to emphasize the gravitational energy that keeps us connected to the Earth spirit. I find these aspects of Muladhara very interesting, having felt these emotions during meditation without knowing their meaning beforehand.
Science! - Science has come closer to providing legitimate evidence that chakras exist within the human body, physics in particular. As is with anything metaphysically related, the root chakra is measured by levels of energy frequencies. It's been found that the root chakra is associated to the musical note "C" and that it vibrates at a sound frequency of 256 hz; thus our chakras can be measured scientifically and mathematically. Red vibrates on the slowest frequency of all light energy in our primary chakra system and produces the lowest pitch of sound waves.
Healing the Root Chakra
Meditation on your root chakra is a great way to get grounded energy flowing, but it is just one of many paths on the road to energetic health. There are a plethora of options for healing and balancing your first chakra, ranging from passive to active methods that keep your red wheel rolling. Since the root chakra is all about remaining grounded to the Earth you can try stomping your feet on the ground as if you were a tree trying to dig in. Walking barefoot on bare earth is also a great way to kick up an electrical charge, so long as you mind your step. Trekking through nature with bare feet is highly underrated for energetic health these days and most people's feet have become softer from wearing socks and shoes all the time. The Earth's grounding energy will have a harder time penetrating the soles of your feet if they're encased in rubber and cloth.
Yoga is also an excellent method of strengthening and balancing your root chakra and all other chakras for that matter. You may be drawn to Child's Pose or Mountain Pose to increase the energetic flow through your root. Not all poses resonate the same for everyone, so do some research and find a ground pose that works well for you. Ask yourself, "how does this pose make me feel"? "Does this pose help me feel secure"?
There are also some crystals that have metaphysical and vibrational characteristics that resonate with the root chakra. Certain minerals like Bloodstone, Red Zincite and Garnet are good grounding stones and can help balance the energy that flows through the first wheel. Try placing Red Jasper or Fire Agate in your pocket throughout the day to stimulate your base chakra's energy. There are many grounding stones for the first energy center, so look around and ask your local metaphysical store which grounding stones they supply.
There are more passive methods for balancing your root chakra as well. Try eating red colored foods like apples, strawberries and peppers if it's appropriate for your diet. Vegetarians and Vegans may want to try roots or veggies that come from underground, such as potatoes, ginger, beets and carrots. Meat lovers can try adding red meats and eggs to their diet too. As always, be sure that these dietary changes are right for you.
Furthermore, Muladhara vibrates to the color of red so try putting some more red in your wardrobe. Red clothing or a room painted red can stimulate grounding energy. Just be mindful of how often you immerse yourself in crimson, as your root chakra could essentially overdose.
Food for Thought - What if modern medicine used low sound frequencies and red light waves for "energy surgery" for diagnosed issues? What if doctors sent clients to a Reiki Master or Spirit Healer instead of a surgeon or pharmacist? Keep in mind that we already use red lasers to perform optical surgery and low sound waves for mental therapy. Imagine laying on a table where only light and sound are used to realign energy within the body or treat diseased organs. No cutting tools, no anesthesia, no overpriced bills, no worries.
I have personal experience in working with the root chakra and I can vouch for the existence of this energy pool. While meditating on my Muladhara I couldn't help but envision myself becoming consumed by red light and summoning overgrown roots to wrap around my legs and hips. I welcomed a surge of steady energy flowing in through my chakra and up my spine, a lot like a channeled wormhole of spiritual energy. It is clear to me, and hopefully to you, that there are several focused points of energy that run through our bodies. I for one am thrilled with science's exploration into metaphysics, waiting with bated breath for the next groundbreaking discovery.
